If you have ever hung up a WhatsApp call and immediately wished you could replay it — a business deal discussed on voice call, a family argument you need to remember clearly, or an important number someone dictated over a voice note call — you are not alone. Thousands of Pakistanis search every month for a WhatsApp call recorder app, and the Play Store is full of apps promising exactly that. Here is the problem: most of those apps do not work the way they claim. This honest review explains why WhatsApp has no built-in recording, what actually works in 2026, and which apps are worth your time.

Why WhatsApp Itself Gives You No Record Button

WhatsApp has never included call recording. Not as a hidden setting, not in any beta version. The reason is not technical — it is policy. WhatsApp operates in dozens of countries with wildly different consent laws, and Meta has decided the legal headache is not worth it. There is also the privacy angle: WhatsApp calls are end-to-end encrypted, and Meta markets that privacy as a selling point. A record button would sit awkwardly next to that promise.

So every recording app on the Play Store is a third-party workaround. They do not integrate with WhatsApp. They sit outside it and try to grab the audio by clever, sometimes fragile means. That is why results vary so much between phones — on a Samsung it can work perfectly while on an Infinix it captures nothing but silence.

The Hard Truth About Recording WhatsApp Calls on Android

Regular phone calls (the ones through your SIM) are relatively easy to record. Android has a native call audio path, and plenty of apps tap into it. WhatsApp calls are VoIP — voice over internet — and Android treats that audio differently. There is no clean “call audio source” for VoIP the way there is for regular calls. This single technical fact is why most WhatsApp recorder apps disappoint.

    The Mic-and-Speaker Trick

The crude approach most recorder apps take: they turn on your phone’s microphone during the call and record whatever it hears. The app captures your voice fine, and the other person’s voice only if it leaks out of your speaker loudly enough. Put the call on speaker at full volume in a quiet room and you will get a rough recording of both sides. Use earpiece mode in a noisy bazaar and you will get your side plus silence.

Why the Other Side Often Goes Silent

Here is the fuller picture. Modern Android versions (Android 10 and above) tightened audio capture rules. Apps can no longer freely grab the internal audio stream the way older versions allowed. The remaining loopholes involve Accessibility services, which let an app monitor what is happening on screen and, on some devices, piggyback on that access to capture call audio more reliably. Whether it works depends on your phone brand, Android version, and even the security patch. Realme, Oppo, and Vivo phones in particular are known to kill background services aggressively, which breaks recording mid-call.

Bottom line: if an app promises “crystal clear two-side recording on all devices,” it is lying. The honest ones say “works on most devices” and explain which phone models are supported. That honesty is rare, which is why you should treat every marketing claim with suspicion until you test it yourself.

What Actually Works in 2026 (Realistic Options)

Forget the fantasy of perfect one-tap recording. These are the methods that genuinely work, with their limits stated plainly.

    1. Speaker Mode Plus Any Recorder

The lowest-tech method still works best for many people. Turn on speaker during the WhatsApp call and record with any voice recorder app, or even a second phone. Quality is mediocre but reliable. For an important call where you need the words captured, this beats a fancy app that records silence. It costs nothing and fails almost never.

    2. Your Phone’s Built-In Screen Recorder

Most Android phones from Xiaomi, Samsung, Realme, and Infinix ship with a screen recorder that can capture internal audio. During a WhatsApp voice call, start a screen recording with internal audio enabled. Video calls record even better this way — you get both the audio and the video of the call. The downside: your screen must stay on and the recording file can get large. Also note that some banks and payment apps block screen recording, so check your recordings before trusting them for anything important.

    3. Google’s Own Call Recording (Network Calls Only)

If you have a Google Pixel phone, the built-in Phone app can record regular SIM-based calls with a spoken consent announcement. But this does not apply to WhatsApp calls. I mention it only because many Pakistanis confuse the two — “my friend’s Pixel records calls” usually means normal calls, not WhatsApp. Do not buy a Pixel expecting WhatsApp call recording out of the box.

    4. Cube ACR — The One Legit Third-Party Option

Cube ACR has been around for years and is one of the few call recording apps with a genuine track record on WhatsApp VoIP calls. It uses Accessibility services to detect and capture VoIP calls on supported devices. On the right phone, it records WhatsApp voice calls on both sides reasonably well. It is a real product from a real developer, not a permission-harvesting clone.

The caveats matter though. Cube ACR works on supported devices — their site maintains a compatibility list, and if your model is not on it, temper your expectations. The free version records calls and lets you play them back; the premium version adds cloud backup, pin lock, and better formats. On some phones you will need to fiddle with battery optimization settings (set the app to “don’t optimize”) or Android will kill it mid-call. And on a few brands it simply cannot capture the other side at all. Test it with a friend’s call before you rely on it for anything serious.

Do not confuse Cube ACR with the dozens of copycat apps named “ACR” or “Call Recorder” with 4.9 ratings from fake reviews. If the developer name is not Catalinagroup and the listing has 10,000 downloads and broken English, skip it.

Red Flags: Permissions That Should Make You Uninstall

Call recorder apps are some of the most permission-hungry software on the Play Store, and a lot of them are harvesting data. A recorder needs the microphone and access to run during calls. That is reasonable. What is not reasonable: an app that also wants your contacts, your SMS messages, your location, your photos, or access to your banking apps. If a “call recorder” asks for accessibility access to read your WhatsApp messages or your JazzCash and Easypaisa notifications, that is a data-theft setup, not a recording feature. For reference on the broader risks of shady apps asking for the wrong access, our guide on who viewed your WhatsApp profile covers a similar pattern of apps that promise one thing and steal another. Delete any recorder that demands permissions unrelated to audio, check the developer’s other apps, and read the actual one-star reviews — those are where real users report stolen data and subscription traps.

The Legal Line in Pakistan: Get Consent

Recording someone’s calls without telling them is risky. Pakistan’s cybercrime law (PECA) treats unauthorized interception of communications as an offense, and secretly recording a private conversation can land you in real trouble. The practical rule is simple: tell the other person you are recording, and get their okay. A quick “I’m going to record this so I don’t forget the details, is that fine?” covers you in almost every situation. Never record calls secretly, and never record a call to embarrass or threaten someone — that moves from a privacy mistake into criminal territory fast.

Setting Up Cube ACR Properly (Step by Step)

If you decide to try Cube ACR, set it up right or you will get silence and blame the app. Follow these steps in order:

    1. Install Cube ACR from the Google Play Store. Avoid sideloading it from random APK sites — those files are a classic way to get malware bundled with a real app’s name.

    2. Grant the microphone permission and the Accessibility service access when prompted. Without these two, nothing records.

    3. Open your phone’s battery settings and set Cube ACR to “Unrestricted” or “Don’t optimize.” This is the step most people skip, and it is the number one reason recordings stop halfway through a call. Samsung, Xiaomi, and Oppo phones are the worst offenders for killing background apps.

    4. In Cube ACR’s settings, enable VoIP recording and select WhatsApp as the target app. Choose MP3 or WAV as the recording format — MP3 keeps file sizes small, WAV sounds better.

    5. Make a test call to a friend. Record it, play it back, and check both sides are audible before you trust it with an important call. If the other side is silent, try the app’s alternative audio source options in settings — on some devices the “Voice recognition (software)” source works where the default fails.

    6. Keep the app updated. WhatsApp changes its audio handling in updates, and Cube ACR’s developers regularly patch compatibility. An app version from six months ago may quietly stop working after a WhatsApp update.

One more tip: if you use two SIMs or a second phone number on one Android phone, make sure Cube ACR is configured for the WhatsApp account tied to the number you actually call from, or your test call will go to the wrong account and you will conclude the app is broken.

The “Earn Money From Call Recording” Scam

Let me be blunt: any app, video, or website claiming you can earn money by recording calls — or that a call recorder app pays you cash — is a scam. A recorder records. It does not generate income. The typical con shows you an app with a fake wallet balance that grows as you “record more calls,” then demands a “withdrawal fee” or asks you to watch hundreds of ads before payout. You will never see a rupee. If an app’s marketing mentions earnings, that is your signal to walk away, not to download.

    Verdict: Should You Bother?

For most people, the speaker-mode trick or the built-in screen recorder is enough. They are free, they need no extra permissions, and they work on every phone. If you record WhatsApp calls regularly and want something more automatic, Cube ACR is the only third-party app I would put my name behind — with the honest warning that it is device-dependent and you must test it yourself. Skip everything else, especially anything that promises earnings or sideloaded APKs from unknown sites. And always get the other person’s consent before you hit record.
