How to Check How Many SIMs Are Registered on Your CNIC

Most people have no idea how many mobile SIMs are actually linked to their CNIC. Maybe you got a SIM years ago for a job that’s long gone, or a shopkeeper registered one in your name using your biometric details for a “friend” who needed an extra connection, or someone in your family used your CNIC once and you forgot about it entirely. In the worst cases, a SIM gets fraudulently issued on your identity without your knowledge at all, which then gets used for scam calls, harassment, or something worse — and if it’s ever traced, it comes back to your CNIC, not theirs.

PTA (Pakistan Telecommunication Authority) actually makes it very easy to check this, and you don’t need an app, internet connection, or a visit to any office. It takes about thirty seconds.

    Why This Actually Matters

Under PTA regulations, a maximum number of SIMs can be registered per CNIC, and every SIM issued in Pakistan legally requires biometric verification at the point of sale. In theory this should make fraudulent registration difficult. In practice, biometric fraud does still happen, particularly through shady franchise outlets that reuse a customer’s fingerprint data to register additional SIMs without the person’s knowledge or consent.

This isn’t just a hypothetical risk. Unregistered or fraudulently registered SIMs under your name can be used for:

    • Scam calls and SMS campaigns, which can get the number (and by extension, your CNIC) blacklisted or reported
    • Illegal activity that then gets traced back to you as the “owner” of the SIM, even though you never used it
    • Simply eating into your legal SIM limit, meaning you might be blocked from registering a new SIM you actually need because you’re already at the cap without realizing it

Checking this every few months, especially if you’ve ever handed over your CNIC or thumbprint at a mobile shop for any reason, is a genuinely useful habit.

How to Check: The SMS Method

This is the fastest and most reliable way, and it works on any basic phone, not just smartphones.

    1. Open your messaging app.
    2. Type your 13-digit CNIC number, without dashes, into a new SMS.
    3. Send it to 8484.
    4. Within a few minutes, you’ll receive a reply listing every mobile number currently registered under your CNIC across all networks — Jazz, Zong, Ufone, Telenor, and others.

There’s no cost for this SMS on any major network, and you don’t need to be a customer of a specific operator to use it, since 8484 is PTA’s own service, not tied to any single telecom company.

What to Do If You Find a Number You Don’t Recognize

If the reply lists a number you’ve never used, don’t panic, but do act on it. Here’s the process:

    1. Note down the unfamiliar number exactly as it appears in the SMS reply.
    2. Visit your nearest CNIC-linked mobile network franchise (or any franchise if you’re not sure which network the unknown number belongs to — the number’s prefix, like 0300 for Jazz or 0333 for various operators, can help you figure out which company to visit).
    3. Request a SIM ownership verification or blocking request, explaining that the number was registered without your knowledge. You’ll need your original CNIC for this.
    4. Alternatively, you can call the PTA helpline or send a complaint through PTA’s official channels if the franchise isn’t cooperative or you’re unable to visit in person.

Franchises are legally required to investigate and, where fraud is confirmed, block or transfer the number appropriately. This process can take a few days, so it’s worth following up rather than assuming it’s been handled automatically.

Getting an eSIM in Pakistan (For Newer Phones)

While you’re thinking about SIM management, it’s worth knowing that most major networks in Pakistan now support eSIMs — a digital SIM built into compatible phones that doesn’t require a physical card at all. If you’ve got a reasonably recent iPhone (XS or newer) or a flagship-tier Android like a Samsung Galaxy S or Note series, you likely have eSIM support already.

Getting an eSIM generally works like this:

    1. Visit your network’s official franchise or service center (Jazz, Zong, Ufone, and Telenor all now offer this) with your original CNIC.
    2. Complete biometric verification, same as you would for a physical SIM.
    3. You’ll be given a QR code, either printed or sent digitally, which you scan using your phone’s SIM settings.
    4. Your phone activates the eSIM profile immediately, no physical card insertion needed.

eSIMs are particularly useful if you’re using a dual-SIM setup, since many recent phones support one physical SIM plus one eSIM simultaneously, letting you keep a personal and work number active without needing a phone that takes two physical SIM cards.

Registering a New SIM: What the Process Actually Requires

If you do need a new SIM, here’s what’s legally required in Pakistan, regardless of which network you choose:

Your original CNIC (not a photocopy — franchises are required to scan the original).

Biometric verification, meaning a thumbprint scan at the point of purchase, matched against NADRA’s database in real time.

Confirmation that you haven’t already hit your maximum allowed SIM count under your CNIC, which the franchise system checks automatically during registration.

If you’re getting a SIM for a family member who can’t visit in person — an elderly parent, for instance — most networks do allow a limited number of SIMs to be registered on someone else’s behalf with their explicit consent and CNIC, but this varies by operator and generally requires the SIM owner’s presence at least once, so it’s worth confirming with the specific franchise beforehand rather than assuming it’s straightforward.

    A Few Habits Worth Keeping

Check your CNIC’s SIM count every few months, especially after using your CNIC or biometrics for any transaction, mobile or otherwise, since biometric data theft isn’t limited to telecom franchises alone.

Never hand over your original CNIC to someone else to “get a SIM registered for you” unless it’s someone you trust completely, since this is one of the most common ways fraudulent registrations happen.

If you’re switching networks or getting a replacement SIM after losing your phone, make sure the old SIM is properly deactivated through official channels rather than just discarding it, since an inactive but still-registered SIM can occasionally be reactivated by someone else if it falls into the wrong hands.

Keep the confirmation SMS or any reference number from a blocking or dispute request, in case you need to follow up or escalate later.

    The Bottom Line

This whole process takes less time than scrolling through a few reels — send your CNIC number to 8484, see what comes back, and deal with anything unfamiliar before it becomes a bigger headache. It’s one of those small, occasional checks that costs nothing and can save you a genuinely frustrating situation down the line if a number under your name ever gets tied to something you had no part in.
