That tiny chip in your phone holds more of your identity than most people realize. This complete guide to SIM card information explains what data lives on a SIM, how SIM registration works in Pakistan under PTA rules, how to check your own SIM details, and how to protect yourself from SIM fraud.

    What a SIM actually stores

A SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) is a tiny secure chip with its own processor. Beyond your phone number, it stores several identifiers that the network uses to recognize you:

    • IMSI — the International Mobile Subscriber Identity, a 15-digit number that identifies your subscription globally. This is what the network actually checks, not your phone number.
    • ICCID — the long number printed on the SIM itself (usually 19–20 digits), which is just the SIM card’s serial number.
    • Authentication key (Ki) — a secret key burned into the chip that proves your SIM is genuine. It never leaves the card.
    • PIN and PUK codes — your SIM PIN (default often 0000 or 1234) locks the card itself; the PUK unlocks it if you enter the PIN wrong three times.

Modern SIMs come in nano size, and many phones now support eSIM — a programmable SIM built into the phone, activated by scanning a QR code from your carrier. In Pakistan, Jazz, Zong, and Telenor have been rolling out eSIM support, though availability still varies by plan.

    SIM registration rules in Pakistan

PTA requires every SIM to be registered against a biometrically verified CNIC. One CNIC can hold a maximum of 5 SIMs (voice/data combined), and all major operators sell SIMs only after thumbprint verification at the franchise or retailer.

The most important habit: check how many SIMs are registered on your CNIC. Fraudulent SIMs on someone’s CNIC are a genuine problem in Pakistan, and they have been used in scams and crimes. Here is how to check:

    1. Send your CNIC number (without dashes) via SMS to 668. You will get a reply listing the number of SIMs on your CNIC per operator.
    2. For the full list with numbers, use the PTA CMS app or visit a customer service center — see our PTA CMS app guide.
    3. If you see a SIM you do not recognize, visit the operator’s franchise with your CNIC and have it blocked immediately.

For the quick reference of carrier codes, our secret mobile codes guide lists balance check and helpline codes for all four networks.

How to find your own SIM information

Need your SIM details? Three quick methods:

    • Phone number: dial *1# on most networks, or check Settings → About Phone → SIM Status on Android.
    • SIM serial (ICCID): printed on the SIM card itself, or under Settings → About Phone → SIM Status → ICCID.
    • PUK code: printed on the original SIM card holder. Lost it? Call your operator’s helpline from another phone and verify your identity — they will give it to you. Never guess the PUK; 10 wrong attempts permanently lock the SIM.

SIM swap fraud: the threat nobody warns you about

SIM swap fraud is when a criminal convinces your operator to issue a replacement SIM for your number, then uses it to receive your OTPs and reset your bank and WhatsApp accounts. In Pakistan this usually starts with a phishing call or SMS asking for your CNIC details.

    Protect yourself with three rules:

    1. Never share OTPs — no bank, no “PTA officer,” no helpline will ever ask for one. Anyone asking is a scammer.
    2. Set a SIM PIN so a stolen phone’s SIM cannot simply be moved to another device.
    3. Treat sudden “no service” seriously. If your SIM suddenly loses signal for no reason, someone may have swapped it. Call your operator from another phone immediately.

Lost or stolen SIM: what to do

Block it fast. Call your operator’s helpline (Jazz 111, Zong 310, Telenor 345, Ufone 333) from any phone, verify with your CNIC, and ask for the SIM to be blocked. You can get a replacement SIM with the same number from any franchise after biometric verification. If you use a second number for work or privacy, see our guide on getting a second phone number — keeping banking and social life on separate SIMs is genuinely good security hygiene.

    The bottom line

Your SIM is a piece of your identity, not just a way to make calls. Keep it registered, check your CNIC’s SIM count at least twice a year via 668, set a PIN, and guard your OTPs like cash — because to a scammer, they are.

How do I check how many SIMs are registered on my CNIC?

Send your CNIC number (without dashes) via SMS to 668. PTA replies with the count of SIMs registered on your CNIC per operator.

What is the maximum number of SIMs allowed on one CNIC in Pakistan?

PTA allows a maximum of 5 SIMs per CNIC across all operators combined.

What is the difference between PIN and PUK codes?

The PIN locks your SIM card itself and you can change it. The PUK is an 8-digit code that unlocks the SIM after three wrong PIN attempts — get it from your operator, never guess it.

What is an eSIM and is it available in Pakistan?

An eSIM is a programmable SIM built into your phone, activated by scanning a carrier QR code instead of inserting a physical card. Major Pakistani operators have begun offering it, though support varies by device and plan.

My SIM suddenly shows no service. What should I do?

First restart your phone and check if it is a network issue. If signal does not return and others on the same network are fine, call your operator from another phone immediately — it could be a SIM swap attempt.

Can I get my old number back if I lose my SIM?

Yes. Visit any franchise of your operator with your original CNIC, pass biometric verification, and you will get a replacement SIM with the same number, usually within minutes.
