You have full 4G bars, yet YouTube buffers and PUBG lags. Sometimes the problem isn’t your network — it’s your phone quietly dropping to 3G or even 2G in the background to save battery, then taking its time to switch back. Learning to force 4G/5G mode on Android locks your phone onto the fastest available network and stops that dance. It takes two minutes, needs no root, and on the right network it genuinely helps. But it can also backfire badly if you use it blindly, so this guide covers the method, the honest tradeoffs, and when not to do it.

Why Your Phone Keeps Dropping to Slower Networks

Android’s default “automatic” network mode constantly re-evaluates signal quality and switches between 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G. The logic is conservative: a weak 4G signal gets abandoned for a strong 3G one, because the phone prioritizes a stable connection over a fast one. In practice, this means your phone can sit on 3G for an hour in a spot where 4G would have worked fine — it just never bothered to switch back up. Forcing LTE-only or 5G-only mode removes the phone’s discretion entirely.

Before you bother, check the obvious: is your SIM 4G-enabled, does your area actually have 4G/5G coverage, and is your package data working at all? Forcing a network mode cannot create coverage that doesn’t exist. If you’re shopping for a better data deal while you’re at it, our Jazz vs Ufone cheapest packages comparison breaks down current bundles.

Method 1: The Hidden Phone-Info Menu (No App Needed)

Android has a built-in testing menu that exposes the preferred network type. Here’s how:

    1. Open your dialer and type *#*#4636#*#*. A “Testing” menu should appear. (On some phones, especially newer Samsung and Xiaomi models, this code is disabled — skip to Method 2.)
    2. Tap Phone information.
    3. Find Set preferred network type (a dropdown).
    4. Choose LTE only to force 4G, or NR only to force 5G (NR = New Radio, the 5G standard). Options like “LTE/WCDMA” allow fallback; “only” modes do not.
    5. Leave the menu. The change applies immediately — watch your status bar.

To undo it, reopen the same menu and pick an automatic option like “LTE/WCDMA/GSM auto” or “5G/LTE/WCDMA/GSM auto”. Nothing is permanent.

    Method 2: Use a Network-Mode App

If the dialer code doesn’t work on your phone, apps like “4G LTE Only Mode” or “Force LTE” on the Play Store open the exact same hidden settings page with one tap. They don’t do anything magical — they’re shortcuts to the menu above, plus extras like signal-strength readouts, cell-tower info, and per-SIM settings on dual-SIM phones. Pick one with solid ratings, grant only the permissions it needs, and avoid clones stuffed with ads. Never download such tools from random APK sites; a network-settings app from an untrusted source is a security risk you don’t need.

    When Forcing 4G/5G Actually Helps

    • Fluctuating networks: your phone hops between 3G and 4G in the same spot. Locking to LTE stops the flapping.
    • Gaming and video calls: stable ping matters more than peak speed, and a locked mode gives you consistency.
    • Speed tests that underperform: if your package promises 4G speeds and you’re getting 3G numbers, the mode lock is the first thing to try.

When It Backfires: The Honest Warnings

This is the part most tutorials skip. LTE-only mode can break your calls. Traditional voice calls travel over 2G/3G networks; if your carrier and phone support VoLTE (voice over LTE), calls work fine on LTE-only. If they don’t — common on older phones or certain networks in Pakistan — you will stop receiving calls entirely while locked to LTE. Test it: lock the mode, then have someone call you.

Other tradeoffs: in weak-signal areas, your phone will cling to a dying 4G signal instead of falling back to usable 3G, so your internet gets worse, not better. Battery drain increases slightly because the radio works harder to hold a weak signal. And 5G-only mode is pointless in most of Pakistan right now — if there’s no 5G tower near you, you’ll have no service at all.

The sane approach: use the lock temporarily (gaming session, big download, video call), then switch back to automatic. Think of it as a tool, not a permanent setting.

    Bottom Line

Forcing 4G mode is a legitimate, reversible trick for unstable connections — not a magic speed booster. Use the hidden menu or a trusted app, verify your calls still work, and switch back to automatic when you’re done. If your phone keeps misbehaving on the network side after all this, the problem may be deeper; our Android system repair guide covers the bigger fixes.

Does forcing 4G mode increase internet speed?

It can, if your phone was unnecessarily dropping to 3G/2G. It cannot exceed what your network and package actually deliver in your area.

Will I still receive calls on LTE-only mode?

Only if VoLTE is enabled on your phone and supported by your carrier. Without VoLTE, incoming and outgoing calls may fail on LTE-only mode. Test with a call after switching.

Does the *#*#4636#*#* code work on all phones?

No. Many Samsung, Xiaomi, and newer phones disable it. In that case, a reputable network-mode app from the Play Store opens the same settings page.

Is forcing 5G mode useful in Pakistan?

Rarely, for now. Commercial 5G coverage in Pakistan is extremely limited, so “NR only” will usually leave you with no signal. LTE-only is the practical choice.

Does locking network mode drain the battery faster?

Slightly, yes — the radio expends more energy holding onto a weak locked signal than it would switching to an easier one. The difference is modest for most users.

Is it safe? Can it damage my phone?

It’s a built-in Android setting, so it can’t damage hardware. The only real risk is missing calls on LTE-only without VoLTE, which reverses the moment you switch back to automatic.
